normal luckyshopsmq %2833%29 Heart disease claimed the life of Thalía’s motherThe official cause of death for Thalía’s mother, Yolanda Miranda was determined to be heart disease. The 76-year-old suffered a fatal heart attack in the early hours of May 27 after complaining of a debilitating headache the night before.

Unfortunately, the singer’s mom—like many women—did not recognize the warning signs of a heart attack, which can also include chest pain, arm pain, shortness of breath, nausea and heartburn.

This lack of awareness is alarming, as heart disease is a growing problem in Mexico, where Miranda lived, and the number one killer of Latinas in the United States, where cardiovascular disease is to blame for a third of all deaths among Latinas.

Contributing factors include high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, cigarette smoking and physical inactivity, all of which feature prominently in our community.

Over 76 percent of Latinas in the U.S. are overweight, with 45 percent of those categorized as obese, and as an ethnic group, we have the highest risk for developing diabetes. What’s more, Latinas are likelier than Caucasians to have high blood pressure, yet less likely to have it controlled. And if that wasn’t bad enough, nearly 60 percent of Latinas are sedentary, meaning that we don’t engage in physical activity to combat these ailments.

normal e8 Thalías mothers death and the Sodi familys history of tragedyAt first glance, Thalía’s life seems charmed: The 39-year-old is an internationally beloved pop singer, telenovela queen, businesswoman and author and she’s eight months pregnant with her second child with hubby/music guru Tommy Mottola.

But in fact, the sudden death of her mother and manager, Yolanda Miranda Mange, last week of a heart attack—just weeks before Thalía is due to give birth and days before another of her daughters was set to get married—was just one of a string of tragedies that has marked the petite singer’s life:

• When Thalía was five, her scientist-criminologist father, Ernesto Sodi Pallares, died after a long illness. After a bedside visit with dad, Thalía blew him a kiss and he almost immediately died. “I always thought that it was my fault,” Thalía once said. A traumatized Thalía didn’t speak for a year.

• Thalía was once engaged to Alfredo Diaz Ordaz, son of former Mexican President Gustavo Diaz Ordaz. They split after a four-year relationship, but remained close. Thalía was on set filming the telenovela Marimar when her mom broke the news that he had died. “When she told me, I started running and sat under a tree and prayed to God for his soul,” Thalía once said.

• Thalía’s sisters, actress Laura Zapata and author Ernestina Sodi, were kidnapped in Mexico City in 2002 as they left a theater where Zapata had been performing. The family hired a team of private investigators and dealt directly with the kidnappers—who had reportedly asked for $1 million ransom—keeping the police out of the case (the Sodis reportedly thought the police may have been in league with the criminals). Zapata was released after 18 days, Sodi after 34 days.

normal 0004 Thalías mother laid to rest in New York City, celebs send condolencesThalía is still reeling from the sudden death of her mother, Yolanda Miranda, but at least she has a close group of friends and family who are there to support her during this difficult time. She recently thanked everyone for their condolences and prayers on Twitter: “In these moments of great pain, I want to say thank you, in my name and the name of my family, to everyone who has been present in various ways: in prayer, in company, in support, in thoughts, in respect; helping to make the death of our mother a little bit less painful. Thanks to the media for the love and respect they have shown us in these last few days. We ask in unity and continue to rely on your prayers.”

Miranda was laid out for viewing at a funeral home in Mexico yesterday, where Thalía’s sister, Ernestina Sodi, also had a small nuptial ceremony with politician Mauricio Camps by her mother’s body. Ernestina’s wedding was long scheduled to occur this Memorial Day weekend, but plans were understandably shifted with the unexpected loss of the matriarch of the famous Sodi family. Thalía traveled to Mexico alongside her hubby Tommy Mottola and her Ob-Gyn since she is just weeks away from giving birth to her second child. She and her sisters: Laura Zapata, Ernestina, Gabriela, and Federica, had long been estranged but were brought back together for the first time in years at the funeral.

In accordance with Yolanda’s wishes, the body was flown to New York and buried in a small intimate ceremony.

Thalía’s mother was laid to rest in New York City after a special mass was held at St. Patrick’s Cathedral this morning in Miranda’s name. Thalía and her sister Ernestina Sodi were expected to be in attendance, but Laura Zapata was not. Yolanda lived most of her life in Mexico, but in recent years gained her permanent residency in the U.S. and spent a lot of time in New York City in a home she owned.

Meanwhile, celebs have been reaching out from the internet to let Thalía know she is not alone. Gloria Estefan tweeted, “Our heart is hurting for this unexpected loss but the love that Yolanda, mother of @thalia, left in this world will live on forever!” and “Our most sincere condolences go out to all of Yolanda and @thalia’s family. We love you and we send you prayers in this difficult moment!”

El Gordo Y La Flaca tweeted: “Our most sincere condolences QEPD (Que En Paz Descanse/May She Rest In Peace) Doña Yolanda,” while Cristina Saralegui chimed in: “My deepest sympathies to @Thalía and her entire family on the death of her mother Yolanda Miranda. Sending love to you all.”

Frenemy Paulina Rubio even sent along her best wishes, and probably understands exactly what Thalía must be feeling since her own father passed away suddenly in January of 2011. “We’re with you @thalia,” La chica Dorada tweeted. ” My greatest condolences. We know you are a warrior just like she was and you will rise above. Remember the light that you have inside and all around you. #fuerzathalia I join in prayer.”

normal madonstickytouraudience08 Emilio Estefan Remembers Thalía’s MotherCuban power couple Emilio and Gloria Estefan are in New York City today to pay tribute to their good friend and Thalía’s mother, Yolanda Miranda Mange, who passed away unexpectedly in Mexico on Friday of what is believed to be a heart attack. Earlier today, Doña Yolanda was laid to rest in a small, intimate funeral service in the presence of close friends and family.

We caught up with Emilio and asked him to tell us about his friendship with the Sodi matriarch, who first approached him in Acapulco about launching her daughter’s singing career nearly 20 years ago. At the time, Thalía was a well-known telenovela actress in her homeland, but she needed that musical Midas touch in order to break through as an international pop star. As her manager at the time, Yolanda knew just who to call on. Once Thalía signed with EMI Latin, Emilio went on to produce almost all of her albums—including Amor a la Mexicana, her bestselling one to date—and direct her videos.

Since then, the Estefans and the Sodis have become as close as family, even spending holidays together. Having lost her father at a young age, Thalia came to see Emilio as a father figure; it was he who introduced the Mexican superstar to music mogul Tommy Mottola, whom she married in 2000.

In an exclusive interview with Latina.com, Emilio remembers his good friend.

Emilio, we know it is a very sad day for those who were close to Doña Yolanda, and that you’ve turned down all interviews, so thank you for speaking to us. What are your first memories of her?

Thalía must have been around 20 years old, and her mom approached me and said, ‘My daughter wants to sing.’ So I said, ‘If you land a record deal, I’ll produce your album.’ Yolanda called me soon after and said, ‘I got it!’ so I got to see that beautiful mother-daughter relationship firsthand.

When was the last time you were with Yolanda?

We all spent Christmas Eve together this past year at Lilli’s [my niece’s] house in Miami, where we go every year. Then I saw her once more here in New York. She looked healthy, that’s why everyone is so surprised. She was at Thalía’s baby shower in New York just the week before she passed away, then she went back to Mexico and complained about her head hurting one night, went to sleep and never woke up. That’s why we have to make the most out of our time here. Our lives can change so drastically in one minute.

What words of comfort have you offered Thalía during this difficult time?

I told her that she should feel so proud of herself because she was an amazing daughter. She took good care of her mother and they were always very close.

How would you describe their relationship?

It’s a beautiful example of a mother who raised her daughter right and always believed in her. And instead of Thalía looking for an outside manager, which would have been really easy, she chose her own mother, someone who always kept her best interest at heart.

When did you start working together?

I worked with Thalía and her mother starting with one of her earliest albums [1995’s En Extasis, which spawned the huge hit Piel Morena]. And we spent over 10 years working together on everything from her sound to her image. I remember at one point Yolanda wanted to change Thalía’s image to be a bit more natural. We’ve always had a relationship that’s like family, which is why this week I’m understandably sad.

Thalía is close to giving birth to her second child. The timing of this must be especially hard on her.

I’m sad that Yolanda won’t get to know her grandchild—boy or girl, I’m not sure what she’s having and I haven’t gotten the chance to ask her. But as tragic as Yolanda’s death is and the timing of it— I believe Thalía is due in just one week— it shows you that there’s always a reason to live. I think we forget that during our day to day, but it’s one of those key facts of life.

What is your fondest memory of Yolanda?

She would always say, ‘You’re like my son, and the day I’m not here, please watch over my daughter.’ I always felt I had a big responsibility to look out for Thalía because her mom placed so much trust in me. In a sweet way, Yolanda was also a bit jealous and she would joke with Thalía, ‘You’re my baby and I love you more than anyone in the whole wide world!’ It’s going to be really hard for Thalia, but like I said, she should feel peace in her heart because she was nothing but a wonderful daughter.
